Itinerary
Mon – We begin our Peak District adventure with a visit to the charming market town of Bakewell, beautifully set on the banks of the River Wye. Enjoy time to explore its historic streets, riverside walks and independent shops, soaking up the relaxed Derbyshire atmosphere. Later, we take in one of the National Park’s most iconic views at Monsal Head, overlooking the dramatic Monsal Viaduct and sweeping limestone dales, especially stunning in May’s fresh spring colours. Then, we unwind with a peaceful evening at the nearby Stuart Hotel in Derby.
Tues – Today we venture into the breathtaking Upper Derwent Valley, home to the impressive Ladybower, Derwent and Howden Reservoirs. Surrounded by rolling hills and wide-open skies, this scenic area offers wonderful photo opportunities and the chance for a gentle walk along the dam walls. This afternoon we visit the atmospheric village of Eyam, known as “England’s Plague Village.” Wander through its historic streets, see the plague cottages and boundary stones, and reflect on the remarkable story of courage and sacrifice that shaped this community. We return to the Stuart Hotel for dinner.
Wed – Our day begins in the picturesque village of Castleton, nestled in the Hope Valley beneath dramatic limestone hills. Enjoy free time to browse the local shops, stroll along the riverside paths or simply relax in one of the village cafés. For those who wish, there is the option to walk up to the ruins of Peveril Castle for panoramic views. Later, we travel through the spectacular Winnats Pass, one of the Peak District’s most striking natural landscapes. We return to Derby for another comfortable evening at the Stuart Hotel.
Thu – This morning we explore the elegant spa town of Buxton, renowned for its Georgian architecture and historic Crescent. Stroll through the beautiful Pavilion Gardens, admire the Opera House and enjoy free time in the town centre. We continue to the charming village of Tideswell, home to the magnificent parish church often called the “Cathedral of the Peak,” a true hidden gem of the National Park. Later, we make our way back to the Stuart Hotel for dinner.
Fri – After breakfast, we head to Matlock Bath, dramatically set in a limestone gorge along the River Derwent. Enjoy time for a riverside promenade walk or to browse the traditional shops. We also visit nearby Cromford, part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, where you can explore the historic mill village and canal basin at leisure. In the afternoon, we bid farewell to the Peak District and begin our journey home, filled with memories of stunning landscapes, historic villages and timeless English charm.
